That Was Me and Thats Me now: I'll Always Be The Stubborn Survivor

My COVID Survival Journey

I was normal, healthy, and thriving at 30 years old. Good money. Newly engaged. A brand-new apartment and a shiny new car. Life felt like it was just beginning.

Then, in the snap of a finger, everything turned upside down.

I’m grateful to have gone through what I did—and still am—because I’ve found the silver lining. It gave me greater awareness, a deeper sense of purpose, and a mindset forged like a warrior.

Before It All Changed

July 15, 2021 — Surrounded by family and friends in Key West, I proposed to my fiancée. She said yes. I thought life would be smooth sailing from that day forward. But the universe had other plans.

Just three days later, on July 18, while driving back from Florida, I went to bed like any other night. The next time I opened my eyes, it was September 11, 2021. I had been in a coma for 55 days and on life support.

The Fight for My Life

Doctors told me I had contracted a severe case of the COVID-19 Delta variant. For two days before hospitalization, I was essentially unconscious—still walking around, doing daily tasks—without knowing my oxygen had dropped to a critical 59%.

I was intubated, placed on a ventilator, and given a tracheotomy. Most people in a coma for more than three weeks face the possibility of life support removal. I stayed under for nearly seven weeks, and against all odds, I woke up.

Waking Up to a New Reality

I spent 76 days in the ICU—55 of them in a coma. When I woke, I was surrounded by:

  • Three chest tubes draining my lungs

  • A tracheostomy tube in my neck

  • A PEG feeding tube in my stomach

While unconscious, my body endured:

  • Atrial fibrillation (three times)

  • Sepsis (twice)

  • Two blood transfusions

  • Rhabdomyolysis

  • Various blood infections

  • Collapsed lungs

I had gone from 194 lbs to just 104 lbs. I was paralyzed. I couldn’t sit up. I couldn’t feed myself. I had to relearn every single movement—from transferring to a wheelchair to standing on my own two feet.

Defying the Predictions

The doctors said I’d never live a normal life again. I’d need oxygen forever. I’d suffer permanent pulmonary fibrosis. I’d require round-the-clock care.

I refused to believe it.

Drawing on my background in fitness, nutrition, and psychology, I built my own rehabilitation plan. With a portable oxygen tank strapped on, I walked on the treadmill daily, slowly rebuilding my lungs and heart function.

The Comeback

Twenty Four months later:

  • My “permanent” fibrosis was gone—completely.

  • I ditched the oxygen tank and breathed freely again.

  • I went from 104 lbs back to a healthy 198 lbs.

  • I regained my independence—walking, talking, living life fully.

More Than Physical

Recovery wasn’t just about muscle or lungs—it was mental warfare. I battled trauma, fear, and the constant shadow of uncertainty.

Even with lingering challenges—fatigue, brain fog, chronic pain, organ complications—I refuse to slow down. My lung function has climbed from 13% to 51%, and I’m still pushing forward.

My Message to You

"To anyone facing adversity, I offer this: You are not defined by your experiences, but by how you respond to them.

I could have let the pain consume me. I could have stayed on pain medications, become addicted, or accepted defeat. But I chose to fight. I chose resilience.

Never surrender to the voice of doubt. Embrace your challenges. Your resilience is your greatest strength.

Today, the noise of life is quieter, and I feel more alive than ever before. My story is not just about surviving—it's living intentionally with purpose instead of existing
